What is a BIN?

A Bank Identification Number (BIN), also called an Issuer Identification Number (IIN), is the first 6 to 8 digits of a payment card number. These digits uniquely identify the institution that issued the card — the bank or financial institution — as well as the card scheme (Visa, Mastercard, etc.), card type (credit/debit/prepaid), and country of issuance.

Why perform a BIN lookup?

BIN lookups are used by payment processors, fraud detection systems, and merchants to verify that a card is what it claims to be. For example, if a customer says their card is a Visa debit card but the BIN resolves to a prepaid Mastercard, that's a red flag worth investigating.

They're also used for geo-targeting (detecting the country of the card issuer), optimising payment routing, and applying the right fee structures for interchange.
